⚡ Timer Features & Capabilities
What makes Yay!Timer different from other timer apps?
Yay!Timer stands out in several key areas:
- Persistent Mode – Pre-generates audio for your entire workout, ensuring voice announcements work reliably even when your screen is off or the app is in the background. Most timer apps fail in these scenarios.
- 32 languages – Voice announcements in 32 languages with per-routine language selection.
- Privacy First – No account required, no cloud sync, no tracking. All data stays on your device.
- One-Time Payment – No subscriptions. Premium is $2.99 once, forever.
- Multi-Person Stopwatch – Time up to 10 athletes simultaneously with individual lap tracking.
What is Persistent Mode?
Persistent Mode is Yay!Timer's premium feature that solves a common problem with timer apps: voice announcements stopping when your screen turns off or the app goes to background.
Here's how it works:
- When you start your workout, Yay!Timer pre-generates an audio file containing all voice announcements.
- This audio file plays through Android's media system, which has higher priority than regular app audio.
- Announcements continue reliably even with screen off, app in background, or phone locked.
This is perfect for intense workouts where you can't keep looking at your phone, or for running/cycling where your phone is in your pocket.
Can I use Yay!Timer while listening to music?
Yes! Yay!Timer is designed to work alongside your favorite music apps like Spotify, YouTube Music, or any other player. When a voice announcement plays, your music volume will automatically lower (audio ducking) and then return to normal.
You can also configure Bluetooth headphone controls to either control your music or your workout, depending on your preference.
Can I use Yay!Timer for Pomodoro sessions?
Absolutely! Yay!Timer is perfect for Pomodoro productivity sessions. You can create custom interval routines with 25-minute work periods and 5-minute breaks, or any variation you prefer (50/10, etc.).
Voice announcements let you focus on your work without watching the screen – you'll hear when it's time for a break and when to get back to work.
📖 Read our complete Pomodoro guide for setup tips and productivity strategies.
How many athletes can I time simultaneously?
Yay!Timer's multi-person stopwatch can track up to 10 athletes simultaneously with individual lap times. This is perfect for coaches, personal trainers, and anyone timing group activities.
You can export all timing data to CSV for detailed analysis in spreadsheet software.
📖 See our guide for coaches and trainers for more tips on group timing.
Can I share routines with my clients or friends?
Yes! You can export any routine and share it with others. They can import it into their Yay!Timer app. This is perfect for:
- Personal trainers sharing workout programs with clients
- Coaches distributing training routines to athletes
- Friends sharing their favorite HIIT or Tabata workouts
You can also create routines on the free-timers.com web app and import them to your Android device.
What is the Mindful Bell feature?
Mindful Bell is a standalone mindfulness feature that schedules bells at configurable intervals throughout your day. It includes:
- 12 bell sounds — Tibetan Bowl, Singing Bowl, Zen Bell, Gong, Temple Bell, and more
- 8 presets — 5 premade (Work Focus, Deep Work, Evening Calm, etc.) + 3 custom
- Session mode — timed meditation with interval bells (premium)
- Guided awareness prompts — 7 pre-recorded prompts (premium)
- Background reliability — bells fire even with screen off or app killed
- Reboot survival — scheduled bells persist across device restarts
Basic bell (1 preset, bell-only) is free. Guided Mode, Session Mode, and multiple presets require premium.
What is Bell-Only Mode?
Bell-Only Mode replaces voice announcements with configurable bell sounds at interval transitions. Choose from 9 bell sounds and set them per-interval or per-routine. Ideal for meditation, yoga, and breathing routines where voice breaks concentration.
What does Announce Next Interval do?
Announce Next Interval speaks the name of your upcoming interval 10 seconds before the transition, then counts down 5-4-3-2 at the 5-second mark. This lets you prepare mentally and physically without watching the screen.
🗣️ 32-Language Voice Announcements
What languages are supported?
Yay!Timer supports voice announcements in 32 languages:
You can set a different voice language for each routine – perfect for multilingual households or international coaches.
App Interface: The UI is also fully translated into 27 languages (English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi, Russian, Bengali, Dutch, Indonesian, Turkish). You can set your preferred UI language independently from voice announcements, or let it match your device language automatically.
Can I use different languages for different routines?
Yes! Each routine can have its own language setting. This is great for:
- Multilingual households where different family members prefer different languages
- Coaches working with international athletes
- Language learners who want to practice by hearing announcements in their target language
You can set a global default language in settings, and then override it for specific routines as needed.
Why do voice announcements stop when I turn off my screen?
In the free Text-to-Speech (TTS) mode, Android may restrict background audio when the screen is off to save battery. This is a common issue with most timer apps.
Solution: Upgrade to Premium and enable Persistent Mode. This pre-generates all voice announcements as an audio file that plays through Android's media system, which has higher priority and isn't affected by screen-off restrictions.
You can also keep the screen on (with automatic dimming) using the Battery Saver options in TTS mode.
💎 Yay!Timer Premium vs Free
What do I get with Premium?
Premium is a one-time $2.99 payment (no subscription!) that unlocks:
- Ad-Free Experience – No banner ads, ever.
- Persistent Mode – Reliable voice announcements even with screen off, app in background, or phone locked.
- Full Workout History – Unlimited access to your workout history and analytics.
All core timer features remain free forever.
Is there a trial period for Premium features?
Yes! When you first install Yay!Timer, you get a 14-day free trial of Premium features, including Persistent Mode and full Workout History access. This lets you try before you buy.
Can I restore my purchase on a new device?
Yes! If you've purchased Premium, you can restore your purchase on any Android device using the same Google account. Just go to Settings in the app and tap "Restore Purchases."
🔧 Troubleshooting Android Timer Issues
What Android version is required?
Yay!Timer requires Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or later. This covers the vast majority of Android devices in use today.
How do I save battery during long workouts?
Yay!Timer has several battery-saving options in the Battery Saver menu:
- Persistent Mode (Premium) – Turn your screen completely off. The pre-generated audio continues playing.
- Screen Dimming – In TTS mode, the screen dims after 10 seconds to save power while keeping audio active.
- Only Visible View Active – Only the active timer view uses resources.
For all-day coaching sessions, Persistent Mode with screen off provides the best battery life.
How do I use Bluetooth headphone controls?
You can configure Bluetooth headphone buttons to control either your music or your workout. Go to Settings → Bluetooth Controls to enable this feature.
Once enabled, you can play/pause your timer and skip to the next interval without touching your phone – perfect for intense workouts.
My voice announcements sound robotic. How can I improve them?
Voice quality depends on your device's Text-to-Speech (TTS) engine. Here are some tips:
- Go to Android Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-Speech and check if you have high-quality voices installed.
- Google's TTS engine offers excellent voice quality. Download additional voice data for your preferred language.
- Samsung devices have Samsung TTS which also provides good quality voices.
Make sure the language you've selected in Yay!Timer is installed on your device's TTS engine.

What data does Yay!Timer collect?
Yay!Timer is designed with privacy first. We collect no personal data:
- No account required

- No tracking or analytics collection
- All routines and workout history stay on your device
The only exception is standard Google Play purchase information for Premium users, which is handled entirely by Google.

- Export routines to a file you can save to cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.)
- Import routines on a new device
- Share routines with friends or clients
